TikTok Just Rolled Out a 5-Hashtag Limit

Codi Foster
September 4, 2025

If you’ve been uploading to TikTok lately, you may have noticed something new: a five-hashtag limit on your posts. That’s right, TikTok is officially capping the number of hashtags you can add to your captions.

At first, this might feel like a setback (especially if hashtags are a big part of your growth strategy). But this update could actually help creators grow more intentionally and reach more relevant audiences. Here’s why the change is happening and how you can adjust your strategy:

Why TikTok is Limiting Hashtags

This move is part of a larger shift across social platforms. Hashtags used to be one of the main ways to categorize and discover content. Now, TikTok’s algorithm recommends videos based on behavior, interests, and engagement—not just tags.

By limiting hashtags, TikTok is aiming to:

  • Cut down on spam: No more captions overloaded with unrelated tags.
  • Streamline discovery: Fewer but more focused hashtags make it easier for TikTok to connect videos with the right viewers.
  • Improve the viewing experience: Cleaner captions mean less clutter in the feed.

It’s a reminder that quality and relevance always outweigh quantity.

How to Choose the Right Hashtags

With only five spots available, every hashtag matters. Instead of throwing together a long list of unrelated hashtags, think strategically:

  1. Mix trending and niche tags → Pair something broad like #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt with a more specific tag such as #HomeOfficeSetup.
  2. Stay relevant → Choose hashtags that describe your actual video. If you’re posting a recipe, go with #EasyWeeknightDinners over a vague #FYP.
  3. Experiment and analyze → Switch up your hashtag mix and track which ones drive the most engagement.
  4. Prioritize community → Focus on tags that help you reach the audience who cares most about your content.

What This Means for Creators

TikTok isn’t the only platform rethinking hashtags. Instagram has said that hashtags no longer help with reach, Threads only allows one per post, and LinkedIn has deprioritized them altogether. The message is clear: hashtags aren’t a shortcut to reach anymore, but a tool to make your content more discoverable to the right people.

This shift puts the spotlight back on creativity, storytelling, and content that resonates. Hashtags can still play a role, but they’re no longer the main growth engine—your content is.

The five-hashtag limit isn’t a roadblock. It’s an opportunity to sharpen your strategy, cut the clutter, and make each tag count. When you focus on relevance and connection, you’ll see stronger results than ever.
