What to Do When You’re Burnt Out But Still Have to Post

Burnout doesn’t always show up when everything stops. In fact, most of the time it shows up when you’re at your busiest, and you can’t afford to just “log off for a month” or “take a break.” For a lot of creators and small business owners, that’s not realistic.

This guide is for the in-between season. The one where you need relief and consistency.

Figure out what’s actually draining you

Not all burnout looks the same. Knowing what you’re dealing with helps you respond without making it worse.

  • Creative burnout → ideas feel forced, uninspired, or repetitive
  • Decision fatigue → posting isn’t hard, choosing what to post is
  • Emotional burnout → engaging, responding, and showing up feels draining
  • Physical burnout → you’re tired before you even open the app

You don’t need to fix all of it at once. Start with the loudest one.

Step 1: Reduce the pressure, not your presence

Burnout gets worse when every post feels like it has to perform. Instead of disappearing entirely, start with shifting your expectations.

That might mean:

  • Posting fewer times per week
  • Sharing simpler formats (photos, carousels, text posts)
  • Reusing or repurposing content that already worked
  • Letting posts be “good enough,” not perfect

Consistency doesn’t require constant output.

Step 2: Separate creation from consumption

When you’re burnt out, scrolling for inspiration usually backfires.

Try this instead:

  • Create first, consume later (or not at all)
  • Pull ideas from your own notes, questions, or past posts
  • Use offline input — conversations, books, walks — as inspiration

Less input often leads to clearer output. Next time you reach for your phone to mindlessly scroll, check out our list of things to do instead of doomscrolling

Step 3: Build a “low-energy content” list

Not every post needs your best energy. Some just need to exist. Create a short list of content you can post even on rough days:

  • Behind-the-scenes moments
  • Text-based thoughts or reflections
  • FAQs you answer repeatedly
  • Reposts, throwbacks, or updates

This way, when burnout hits, you won’t have to start from scratch.

Step 4: Automate or batch where you can

Burnout thrives on constant decision-making. If posting is non-negotiable, remove as many small decisions as possible:

  • Batch content on higher-energy days
  • Schedule posts in advance with Planoly’s Social Planner
  • Save caption templates or recurring keywords in Planoly’s Keyword & Caption Library
  • Reuse existing content structures instead of reinventing them

Systems don’t kill creativity. They protect it.

Step 5: Let your audience meet you where you are

You don’t have to explain everything, but honesty often resonates more than perfection.

A simple acknowledgment can be enough:

  • “Keeping things simple this week.”
  • “Trying a slower pace lately.”
  • “Showing up differently right now.”

In an AI-heavy world, people are craving real, human connection more than ever. Don’t be afraid to show up as whatever version of yourself is available that day.

Burnout doesn’t mean you’re failing. It usually means you’ve been carrying too much for too long. If you still have to post, give yourself permission to make it lighter, simpler, and more human. You can protect your energy and still show up consistently.
