If you’ve tried using AI to help you build out a content calendar or create a post, you may have thought it was useless. It probably spit out ideas that were generic, unoriginal, or didn’t even match what your brand is. Chances are, you’re just putting in the wrong prompt.
AI tools are only as intelligent as valuable is the direction you give them. If you’re putting vague prompts and lackluster information in, you’re going to get vague and lack luster responses. But when you treat AI like a real creative collaborator by giving it context, your goals, and a specific task, it can genuinely help you get past roadblocks and create the foundation for content that performs.
Good AI prompts are specific, strategic, and rooted in your audience and goals. They treat the AI like a strategist who needs a brief, instead of a magic button that spits out the answers.
Bad: "Write me a hook for my video about skincare." Good: "My audience is women 18-32 interested in acne-safe beauty. Write 5 hook options for a Reel that will stop a scroll in the first 3 seconds."
Bad: "Write me a caption for my post about acne-safe beauty products." Good: "Write a caption for an Instagram carousel about the top 5 acne-safe foundations. My audience is in their 20s and values affordability. Keep it conversational, under 150 words, and end with a question to drive comments."
Bad: "How should I film my video?" Good: "I'm filming a 30-second TikTok review of a new SPF moisturizer. What on-camera movements, expressions, or transitions would make this feel more dynamic and keep viewers watching until the end?"
Bad: "Explain what non-comedogenic means." Good: "Explain what non-comedogenic means for someone who is new to skincare and doesn't know any beauty jargon. Keep it under 3 sentences and make it feel friendly."
Bad: "Give me content ideas." Good: "I post about acne-safe makeup for women in their 20s. Give me 10 content format ideas (Reel, carousel, talking head, etc.) that would work well for this niche and are trending on Instagram right now."
To build good prompts, you also need a good character brief. Most AI platforms have a memory storage component they can pull from to generate answers that apply to only you. It’s your responsibility to give the AI a brief of your brand, your content style, your niche, audience, and goals so that it can effectively tailor its responses. Build your brief out once, and you’re done. It’s a practical front-load step that will help you generate ideas that actually sound like you.
One of the most underused skills for creators is repurposing content. You’ve already built it, and now AI can help you transform it. Instead of asking AI to create something new every time, feed it content you've already made and ask it to expand on it, combine it, or simply refresh it. You can update the content itself, or even just the format. Maybe a carousel you previously posted didn’t get great engagement–that’s OK. Work with AI to build a Reel script based off that post, and test how the same content performs through different formats. This saves time, gives you valuable content feedback, keeps your messaging consistent, and stretches a great idea across multiple platforms.
"Here's the script from my YouTube video. Pick out the 3 most shareable moments I can turn into standalone TikTok videos that are under 30 seconds."
"Here's the script from my latest Reel. Help me turn it into an Instagram caption that captures the same energy, and add a call to action at the end."
"Here's a single-graphic post I made about the top 5 acne-safe foundations. Turn this into a 5-slide carousel series where each slide focuses on one foundation with a key stat or benefit and a line of copy."
Before you hit send on any AI prompt, ask yourself these four questions:
If the answer to any of those is no, add more to your prompt or to your brand brief. The more context you can give, the better the output will be. If you use AI like a tool, and you put in the time and effort to build a strong framework, it can take your content creation process and output to the next level.
