Meta is officially testing a paid subscription tier on Instagram called Instagram Plus, and while it's only live in a handful of countries right now, it's worth paying attention to, especially if Stories are a core part of how you connect with your audience.
Nearly every feature in the package revolves around Stories, and that's a deliberate choice. Stories remain one of the highest-engagement formats on the platform, and Instagram is clearly betting that creators and everyday users alike will pay for more control over how they use them.
Let's break down each feature being offered, and why it actually matters for growth.
Subscribers can view someone's Story without the poster seeing that they viewed it–which is like a competitive intel tool for creators. You can quietly research what others in your niche are posting, what formats they're experimenting with, and how they're structuring their content without tipping them off.
Subscribers can see how many times their own Story has been rewatched. This is genuinely useful data. If a specific Story is getting rewatched repeatedly, that's a strong signal that the content resonated, confused people (in a good way), or made them stop and think. It helps you identify what's actually landing with your audience beyond a simple view count.
Subscribers can create unlimited audience lists for Stories, beyond a Close Friends list, meaning you can customize who sees each Story by grouping followers into different lists instead of only having the option to share with everyone or just one limited group.
For creators, this is a big deal. You could create separate lists for your most engaged followers, potential brand partners, local audience segments, or even a "superfans" tier. It brings a level of content segmentation to Instagram that most creators have had to hack together workarounds for.
Subscribers can extend a Story for an extra 24 hours, which sounds simple, but is practical. If a Story is performing well and driving clicks or DMs, you no longer have to remember to repost it before it disappears. You get another day of visibility without any extra effort.
Subscribers can spotlight a Story up to once per week, increasing its visibility by bringing it to the front of the Stories tray for followers. For smaller creators trying to stay top-of-mind without a massive following, this weekly bump could make a real difference in staying visible during algorithm-heavy periods.
Subscribers can search their Story viewer list to quickly see if a specific person viewed their Story, and can send an animated "Superlike" on others' Stories. The viewer search is a handy relationship management tool, so you can track whether key collaborators, brand contacts, or high-value followers are actually seeing your content.
The subscription is currently being tested in Mexico, Japan, and the Philippines, with pricing varying by country–roughly $1 to $2.20 USD per month. Meta hasn't announced a broader rollout yet.
It's still early days, but if the test rolls out globally, we can expect the Stories game to shift.
