Instagram's filtered tab feature for direct messaging is a game-changer for organizing and keeping up with messages and responses. The direct messaging feature allows users to filter messages by primary, general, and requests. For influencers and businesses with a large influx of incoming messages, the tool is immensely helpful for responding to relevant messages in a timely manner. Here's what each filter means and how to use them.
Primary is your main inbox for messages you want to see first. Think of it as your VIP tab — close friends, regular collaborators, and important conversations should live here. This is also the only tab that sends you automatic notifications by default, so anything here will get your attention right away.
General is for messages you want to get back to later. By default, notifications are turned off for this tab, but you can switch them on in your settings at any time. It's a good place to park lower-priority conversations without them cluttering your main inbox. You can move any thread between Primary and General by pressing and holding a conversation and selecting "Move to Primary" or "Move to General."
Requests contains direct messages from accounts you don't follow who you have never messaged before. You can either accept or deny these, and they won't be marked as seen until you accept them — so you can preview a message without the sender knowing you've read it. This is especially useful for filtering out spam while still being able to spot genuine outreach from new followers, brands, or collaborators.
Whether it's feedback from customers, inquiries from influencers, brand collaborations, or even a funny meme from a friend, there can be a lot of content to sift through in your Instagram DMs. Luckily, these filtered tabs makes that process a bit more manageable. We love anything that makes it easier to keep track of our digital presence - and in this case, that means staying on top of everyone sliding into our DMs. It's especially helpful for users whose inboxes are flooded and overwhelming.
